Stay Secure This Festive Season: Essential Cybersecurity Tips for SMEs
We’re all truly into the festive swing now, but whilst we’re all basking in celebrations and enjoying ourselves, it’s crucial that businesses remain secure. Enjoying a well-deserved break shouldn’t mean that business security goes out the window!
Unfortunately, cyber attack attempts increase by 30% over the Christmas period compared to the monthly average.
Why Cyber Attacks Increase During The Christmas Period
- Increased Online Shopping: With lots of online shopping and bargains to be found in the lead up to Christmas, we’re more likely to be sucked in by adverts and offers at this time of year and click on a malicious link disguised as an attractive offer.
- Blurring Lines Between Personal and Work Devices: We’re more likely to access personal items on our work devices and work stuff on our personal devices over Christmas. This blurs the lines between business and personal ecosystems and their respective security measures.
- Reduced Number of Staff: Most of us take some time away from work over the holidays. Cyber attackers don’t though. The reduced or inactive security teams at businesses provide the perfect opportunity for cyber criminals.
With this in mind, below are our top tips for keeping your business secure over Christmas.
How to Protect Your Business Over Christmas
Update All Software and Systems: Ensure all your software, including antivirus programs, are up-to-date. This helps protect against the latest threats.
Backup Your Data (and Practise Recovering): Ensure all critical data is backed up regularly and securely. It’s a good idea to do a practice recovery so you’re confident if you need it in real life. Effective backup and recovery can save your business in case of a ransomware attack.
Strengthen Your Passwords: Ensure all passwords are long, complex, and unique for different accounts. Administrators should have separate admin and user accounts for security.
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling MFA. Even if a hacker has your password, they won’t be able to access your accounts without the second factor.
Review Access Controls: Limit access to your systems to only those who need it. Ensure former employees no longer have access to your systems.
Secure Remote Access: Ensure that remote access to your systems is secure, using VPNs and strong authentication methods.
Monitor for Suspicious Activity: Keep an eye on your systems for any unusual activity, especially during the festive period when staff are away and your business isn’t operating as usual.
Educate Your users: User education is the most effective measure to prevent cyber attacks. With the increase in cyber threats, Christmas is a time to be extra vigilant, not a time to let your guard down.
And finally, enjoy your Christmas knowing you’ve taken appropriate measures to protect your business.
